Victims of Sexual Abuse

The topic of sexual abuse has long been hidden behind closed doors. Now it is the news. Sadly, abused children are often victimized by adults in our most sacred establishments — religious institutions and schools — where clergy, teachers, coaches, and administrators can take advantage of their positions of power and trust to force children into abhorrent sexual acts.

New York Child Victims Act Lawsuits

The public outcry for justice for the innocent victims of sexual abuse at the hands of powerful aggressors has finally forced the New York State Legislature to act. The Child Victims Act extends the time period for victims to sue their abusers and the institutions that failed to protect them when they were most vulnerable. Individuals until their 55th birthday can now bring civil lawsuits seeking monetary compensation. Additionally, beginning in August 2019, there is a one-year window for those age 55 and older to commence their case.

These lawsuits will monetarily compensate victims for the pain and anguish that their sexual abuse has long caused. If you have come to our website, chances are that you or someone you love has been the victim of sexual abuse. Although nothing can erase the abuse and the years of suffering that it has caused, abuse victims now have the legal tools to fight back.

Who Can Sue Under the New York Sex Abuse Law?

Under the new legislation, anyone up to their 55th birthday who is a victim of sexual abuse can commence a lawsuit against the sexual predator and their employer, often a religious institution or a school district. For a one-year period beginning in August 2019, anyone, including those age 55 and over can commence litigation.

ACT NOW — The Time to File is Limited

It is urgent that you act now. It has taken the New York State legislature years to act. Now that they have, don’t let your time to file a lawsuit expire.
